Dimethyl sulfoxide is an extremely important aprotic polar solvent soluble in both water and organic solvents. It is widely used as solvent and reaction reagent, and has high selective extraction ability. Dimethyl sulfoxide itself has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, diuretic, sedative and other effects, and can be directly used as the raw material and carrier of some drugs in the pharmaceutical industry. Known as the "panacea", it is often added to medicines as the active ingredient of painkillers.
1. It is used for aromatic hydrocarbon extraction, reaction medium for resin and dye, acrylic fiber polymerization, solvent for spinning, etc.
2. It can be used as organic solvent, reaction medium and organic synthesis intermediate. Uses are very wide. This product has high selective extraction ability, used as the polymerization and condensation solvent of acrylic resin and polysulfone resin, the polymerization and spinning solvent of polyacrylonitrile and acetate fiber, the extraction solvent of alkane and aromatic hydrocarbon separation. Aromatic hydrocarbon, butadiene extraction, acrylic fiber spinning, plastic solvent and reaction medium for organic synthetic dyes, pharmaceuticals and other industries. In terms of medicine, dimethyl sulfoxide has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, and has strong penetrating power to the skin, so it can dissolve certain drugs, so that such drugs can penetrate into the human body to achieve the purpose of treatment. Utilizing this carrier property of dimethyl sulfoxide, it can also be used as an additive for pesticides. A small amount of dimethyl sulfoxide is added to some pesticides to help the pesticide penetrate into the plant to improve the efficacy. Dimethyl sulfoxide can also be used as dyeing solvent, de-staining agent, dyeing carrier for synthetic fibers, absorbent for recovering acetylene and sulfur dioxide, synthetic fiber modifier, antifreeze, capacitor medium, brake oil, extraction of rare metals agent, etc.

4, skin penetration enhancer. Dimethyl sulfoxide is one of the earliest transdermal penetration enhancers, and its permeation-enhancing properties may be related to its solvent properties. Dimethyl sulfoxide can denature proteins in skin keratinocytes; it can destroy the orderly arrangement of lipids between stratum corneum cells; it can remove stratum corneum lipids, lipoproteins, and enhance the penetration of drugs, but use high concentrations of dimethyl sulfoxide. When sulfoxide is used, it will cause erythema, blisters and irreversible damage to the skin, and it has been banned in the United States. The usual concentration is 30%-50%.
5. Antifreeze. The freezing point of pure dimethyl sulfoxide is 18.45 ℃, and dimethyl sulfoxide containing 40% water does not freeze at -60 ℃, and dimethyl sulfoxide exotherms when mixed with water and snow. Therefore, it is convenient to make automobile antifreeze, brake oil and hydraulic fluid components. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is no longer applicable when the temperature exceeds -40°C, and has a lower boiling point than dimethyl sulfoxide, which is toxic and prone to air resistance. Dimethyl sulfoxide antifreeze is used in cars and chariots in northern severe cold regions, and can be replenished with snow instead of water at any time. Dimethyl sulfoxide is also used in deicing agents, coatings, antifreezing agents for various latexes, antifreezing agents for gasoline and jet fuel, and antifreezing agents for cryopreservation of bone marrow, blood and organs.
